Well, here is a solution for such problems. All you need to do is, get yourself the Eizo C@T-one from Nanao Japan, which happens to be a mouse but doubles up as a TV remote as well. It works on 2.4Ghz frequency and has a scroll wheel, which is just convenient, and of course, an optical sensor, which would serve many, purposes, and switches off after 30 minutes.

It also has a tilt sensor which may remind you of the iPhone and hence, when you tilt the device, it turns from being a mouse to being a remote control. You can control the power, channel, volume etc. You need AA batteries and has a USB receiver and the device is compatible with Mac and Windows. It costs about $125 and is available in Japan.
